Prospective Users  -  What Software do I Need?

Palm PDAs come with a great package on software built-in such as the datebook, addressbook, memo pad, and to-do list (for information on the built-in programs, click here). However, there are a few pieces of third-party software which you will want to add to your PDA. One class of these programs are the basic applications that will allow you to view the large assortment of reference files available on the web.

Document Reader

  AportisDoc
These programs allow you to view DOC files, such as books (also known as e-texts) and short reference files. There are also programs available that will convert word processor files into DOC format for viewing on your Palm. Several companies make document readers which generally have the same functionality. Handy features include the ability to bookmark important parts of DOC files for quick reference as well as the ability to perform keyword searches. Available DOC readers include AportisDoc by Aportis, TealDoc by TealPoint Software, Express Reader by Qvadis.

Database
  JFile

Most database files that have been submitted on the Internet are written for one of two standard databases, JFile by Land-J Technologies and HanDBase by DDH Software. In addition to using files submitted by others, you can design your own databases to store data exactly the way you want to. There are a couple of more powerful database application such as Satellite Forms available as well that offer full Microsoft Access data exchange capability.

FireViewer
  FireViewer

FireViewer by FirePad is not necessarily essential, but there are a lot of image files out on the Internet that use this format. FireViewer allows you to look at image files on your PDA. While this program is not as essential as a document reader or database, it does come in handy.

Hackmaster

Hacks are small files that you can use to customize your PDAs functionality (for a full article on hacks, click here).

  HackMaster
Hackmaster is exactly what the name says, the master of the hacks. After installing Hackmaster on your PDA, it will appear in your application launcher. By running this application, you can activate and deactivate whatever hacks you have installed with the tap of your stylus. You will need to have Hackmaster installed on your PDA, if you choose to use hacks. While hacks are not the answer to every problem, they definitely have some advantages and can help to make your PDA experience a little better.

While these programs are not the only programs that you will ever want to install on your PDA, they should give you a good start. Because of the ease at which you can install and delete programs on your Palm PDA, I would encourage you to install new programs as they pique your interest and simply remove them if you don't use them. Everyone is different so you will just have to use trial and error to develop the perfect product mix for you.
