How-To Guides  -  Upgrading your PDA Desktop Software

If you regularly use the desktop software that came with your handheld device as your personal information manager, you will probably be interested in the periodic updates to that software that are available free of charge. These newer versions generally include not only fixes that may have be discovered in the version you have now, but additional features that expand the overall functionality of the software.

Once you have made the decision to upgrade you will find the process is quite simple, generally involving very little more than downloading and installing the software. Your first stop should be the web site of the manufacturer of your device. In most cases, you will find a link to download the upgrade there or instructions on where to go to look. It is important to note, that simply because your device uses the Palm OS®, it is not guaranteed that the upgrade available at the Palm web site will function properly. When in doubt, contact the customer support department of your device manufacturer.

Step 1: Download the Software

Current versions of the desktop software will usually be available for download from the web site of your device manufacturer. You can also check the Palm.com web site to see if your hardware is supported by the software available on their site. If you are a PC user, you can get more information at http://www.palm.com/software/desktop . If you are a Mac user, check http://www.palm.com/software/desktop/mac.html.

Once you have located the download you wish to get, make sure to carefully read any instructions and warnings that may be posted. This information usually only takes a few minutes to read and can save you from a whole lot of heartache that lost data of software incompatibilities might cause.

Step 2: HotSync your Device

Whenever you make changes to anything related to your handheld, it is a good idea to perform a HotSync before you begin. This will ensure that all of your data is backed up on both your device and your desktop, just in case things don't go according to plan.

Step 3: Install the Software

Double-click on the file you downloaded to your computer to start the installation process. If you downloaded a self-executing file (one with a .exe extension) installation will proceed automatically and prompt you for information when necessary. If the file you downloaded is a compressed archive such as one with a .zip extension, you will need to make sure you have decompression software (such as WinZip) installed on your computer before you proceed. From the decompression tool window, select the Setup file to perform the desktop software installation.

Step 4:HotSync your Device Again

Once installation is complete, you may need to restart your computer for the new software settings to take effect. After you have done this, put your device in the cradle and press the HotSync button to make sure everything is working normally. If you receive any error messages, perform the installation process again. If that doesn't help, contact the customer service department of your device manufacturer for assistance.
